Dale Shewalter Obituary

Dale Richard Shewalter, 59, of Flagstaff, AZ died January 10, 2010 in Flagstaff, AZ after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was a family man, educator, combat marine, and Trailblazer and exceptional person, born May 16, 1950 in Geneva, IL. Dale grew up in Geneva, IL and graduated from Geneva HS in 1968. At GHS he was an outstanding wrestler and football player. In June 1968 he enlisted in the Marines Corps serving in Vietnam with the 1/7 Marines at Hill 55 and Liberty Bridge in 68' and 69'. After service, he earned a degree in Geology at Southern Illinois University, and later his MS from Northern Arizona University. In 1974 Dale met the first love of his life, Arizona, and began his teaching career in Flagstaff. It was there he met the true love of his life, Madeleine. Together, they bought several acres of land east of Flagstaff and established, with the help of their son Zane, a small ranch where they kept horses and raised other critters. Recently retired from teaching, Dale was acknowledged as a dedicated educator who throughout the years was the motivating force for hundreds of students. Over the years, Dale always enjoyed it when former students (and often times parents) would check in with him. He recently talked a lot about his former students returning from military service in Iraq or Afghanistan and calling/visiting and how meaningful that was to him. Had Dale been born a century earlier his name would probably be as well known as Kit Carson, John Fremont, or perhaps even Lewis and Clark. Dale's accomplishments as a Trailblazer are widely known. He is recognized as the the "Father of the Arizona Trail". His efforts, from concept to near completion of the Arizona Trail are recounted in numerous books, magazine and newspaper articles. Outdoor enthusiasts from all over the world enjoy part or all of the 817 mile Arizona Trail. Recently the President of the United States signed a bill that the designated the Arizona Trail as a National Scenic Trail. Dale leaves behind his wife, Madeleine and their son, Zane. He is survived by sisters, Linda Biehl of Newport Beach, CA, and Laurie Martin of Wickenburg, AZ. He has a brother Steve (Margot) Shewalter of Batavia, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Margaret Shewalter; brother in law, Peter Biehl; and niece Amy Biehl. Dale has several nieces and nephews. For more details relating to Dale email: [email protected] Madeleine and Zane wish to express their most heartfelt appreciation to all their many friends for gestures of concern and kindness. Services are pending in Flagstaff, AZ. Contributions in Dale's memory may be made to the Arizona Trail Association, POB 36736, Phoenix, AZ 85067-6736 or The Amy Biehl Foundation, POB 2926, Newport Beach, CA 92659.

Hi Laurie, You and I haven't communicated in YEARS because I lost my phone with your contact information in it and ... didn't have anything backed up. I wonder if you will see this? I'd love to reconnect. Judy King

I found this painting several months ago at an estate sale. Other than the uncanny likeness to Dale, it's not of a specific person. Initial research reveal it's probably from 60 - 80 years ago. I will find out the exact date.

It is our loss for not keeping up with Geneva's young men, and after reading the great article in Arizona Highways we were sad to hear of Dale's passing. His mother and father were good friends of ours and they would be very proud of him, we remember Dale growing up, and when he returned from the service. He would remember us as the people who owned the Ace Hardware in Geneva. We are very proud to have known him and will pray for his family.

To the Shewalter Family;
On behalf of the Officers and Legionaires of Cantigny Post 556, 1st Division Museum, Cantigny, Wheaton, IL, I wish to extend my condolences to you all on the death of Dale. Cancer is an evil disease, stiking down exceptional people in the prime of their lives. But take assurance that God and St. Peter met him at the gates of heaven with a hearty "Semper Fi" to which he replied "Hoorah", as any good Marine would. Again, my condolences and our prayers are with you.

Dale was probably the toughest man that I ever had the privilege of knowing. A United States Marine, he always exemplified duty, honor, country. As he battled cancer these past 5 years, I witnessed a courage that very few men can muster. Under continuous pain and countless setbacks in his struggle to beat the disease there was always the optimism that tomorrow would be brighter and better. I was lucky to know Dale even though our meetings were few. He touched many lives through his career as an educator and definitely made a positive contribution that will last for decades to come!

Shewalter Family--I also knew Dale through football in Geneva and always thought he was a great guy. I lost track of him for many years but remember seeing his name in an article about the Arizona Trail and wondering if it was possible that it was the same Dale--I have spent much time on the trail over the years as Arizona has been my home since 1979. Wish I would have known that Dale was here. I will surely think of Dale each time I explore another bit of Arizona wilderness!

Dear Laurie, Linda and Steve,
Not having met Dale's Flagstaff family, I find myself extending my condolences to each of you, though both Madeline and Zane are in my thoughts.
The world and everyone that Dale touched is forever changed for the better. Indeed, his legacy lives on - even in my own 10 yr. old daughter - by virtue of his passions - first and foremost: the care and safekeeping of the environment - and to 'leave a trail' where there once was none.
My life has been blessed and I am a better person because of Dale.
Most sincerely,
Judy King
