Hi Laurie, You and I haven't communicated in YEARS because I lost my phone with your contact information in it and ... didn't have anything backed up. I wonder if you will see this? I'd love to reconnect. Judy King

I found this painting several months ago at an estate sale. Other than the uncanny likeness to Dale, it's not of a specific person. Initial research reveal it's probably from 60 - 80 years ago. I will find out the exact date.

It is our loss for not keeping up with Geneva's young men, and after reading the great article in Arizona Highways we were sad to hear of Dale's passing. His mother and father were good friends of ours and they would be very proud of him, we remember Dale growing up, and when he returned from the service. He would remember us as the people who owned the Ace Hardware in Geneva. We are very proud to have known him and will pray for his family.

To the Shewalter Family;
On behalf of the Officers and Legionaires of Cantigny Post 556, 1st Division Museum, Cantigny, Wheaton, IL, I wish to extend my condolences to you all on the death of Dale. Cancer is an evil disease, stiking down exceptional people in the prime of their lives. But take assurance that God and St. Peter met him at the gates of heaven with a hearty "Semper Fi" to which he replied "Hoorah", as any good Marine would. Again, my condolences and our prayers are with you.

Dale was probably the toughest man that I ever had the privilege of knowing. A United States Marine, he always exemplified duty, honor, country. As he battled cancer these past 5 years, I witnessed a courage that very few men can muster. Under continuous pain and countless setbacks in his struggle to beat the disease there was always the optimism that tomorrow would be brighter and better. I was lucky to know Dale even though our meetings were few. He touched many lives through his career as an educator and definitely made a positive contribution that will last for decades to come!

Shewalter Family--I also knew Dale through football in Geneva and always thought he was a great guy. I lost track of him for many years but remember seeing his name in an article about the Arizona Trail and wondering if it was possible that it was the same Dale--I have spent much time on the trail over the years as Arizona has been my home since 1979. Wish I would have known that Dale was here. I will surely think of Dale each time I explore another bit of Arizona wilderness!

Dear Laurie, Linda and Steve,
Not having met Dale's Flagstaff family, I find myself extending my condolences to each of you, though both Madeline and Zane are in my thoughts.
The world and everyone that Dale touched is forever changed for the better. Indeed, his legacy lives on - even in my own 10 yr. old daughter - by virtue of his passions - first and foremost: the care and safekeeping of the environment - and to 'leave a trail' where there once was none.
My life has been blessed and I am a better person because of Dale.
Most sincerely,
Judy King
