He is a member of the Chicago Tribune's All-Star Track Team, also had one of the state's top times in the 880-yard run that year. During his senior year at Northern Illinois, he had the team's best time in the 1, 000-yard run during the indoor track season. He also was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. Charles maintained a lifelong commitment to physical fitness, belonging to the health club at Loyola and riding his bicycle around the village and along the Bemis Woods Path. He enjoyed socializing with friends, reliving high school and college times.
