It going to be one year soon since Dad has entered heaven. He was looking forward to meeting up with his family and friends who passed before him. He truly believed he would say hello to all of them. I got to spend time with him at the end we kept each other company, especially the last nights. He knew I was there and we held hands and said the rosary one morning, I did the talking and he squeezed my hand. He passed in peace like a candle blown out by the breeze. Dan was there Dad took a breath and was gone. God sent his son to forgive sins and sent my Dad to do everything else. I stopped by his grave site yesterday and said a prayer, I said all the words and he squeezed my hand.

When people speak of the "Greatest Generation" this country has ever know it is no doubt that Mr. Downey, my dad, and all of the wonderful men of that era have earned that title. Men of great faith, pride in their family, and a work ethic like no other. My family will keep your family in our prayers.

Dear Jean Ann and family,

It was with profound sadness that we learned of Uncle Bernie's passing on Friday. He was a man who truly lived his beliefs, and his philanthropy was remarkable, especially concerning Catholic causes.

We recall the last time we saw you and Bernie at Uncle Joe's last celebration. He arranged for a second mass Sunday morning, where he demonstrated his deep faith and concern for family. In many ways, he was larger than life.

Only our mother, Dorothy, and Uncle Tom remain of the robust Downey family from Lima. We wish we could be with you tomorrow to pay our respects, but work commitments preclude it.

He was a great example to us all. May he rest in peace.

Bernard will be greatly missed by his friends and family and all of the lives he touched over the years especially the people who were so blessed to be in his loving employ.
Bernie, as I came to know him, was a cherished friend, who shared with me stories of his family, his loving wife and of longtime friends which it turned out included my late Uncle Bob Wasz and family when they were neighbors in Hinsdale. My cousin even took over his company.
Small world.
Most of all, this man helped bring God into my life and restored my spirituality at a time I needed from it most, not just through his self-authored book but his daily blessings. We prayed for each other, with others and for those I'd never thought of praying for. He taught me there's a prayer in every heartbeat and all about Jesus/Mary/Joseph. He lifted my spirits all of the time and often made me feel like we'd known each other our entire lives.
I will miss you.
With Love,
Your forever friend
