Bernard Cooney Obituary

Bernard Jerome Cooney

Bernard Jerome "Jerry" Cooney, 81, of Elmhurst.

Beloved husband of Margaret nee Heiser for 57 years; loving father of Michael (Lynn), Karen and John (Lisa); grandfather of Brenna, Marcus, Joshua, Caroline and Sophia; brother of James E. (Sandra); loved uncle of many nieces and nephews.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jerry, a loving husband, a devoted father and a friend to all. Born on August 27, 1935, in Oak Park, Jerry spent his entire life in the Chicago area. He loved people and enjoyed making them smile. He had a great love for animals and never missed an opportunity to care for them. Most important to Jerry was his family. Following a successful career as a salesman in the paper industry, Jerry enjoyed serving as a crossing guard for Visitation school children which he did proudly for 10 years. Rumor has it that people altered their route just to see Jerry, at the corner of Madison and Kearsage, because he made their day. He made our day every day for 81 years. He will truly be missed by his family and friends.

Memorial gathering at Visitation Church, 779 S. York St., Elmhurst from 9:45 A.M. until time of Memorial Mass at 10:45 A.M. Friday, May 19, 2017. Interment Private.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials will be appreciated for Elmhurst Extended Care Center, 200 E. Lake St., Elmhurst, IL 60126.

Dear John and the cooney family,
I was driving past my parents old house on oneida street the other day and was told about the passing of Mr Cooney. I too remember the ice rink Mr cooney built each winter. Mr lynch made one also, but the ice rink at the cooneys was the best. I also remember the sand box he made. Mr cooney was very creative and always making things. It was fun to play at their house because they had the best toys. On hot summer days I remember riding our big wheels around the block and getting a popsicle treat from the freezer in their garage. My favorite was the red, white, and blue rocket type. I was saddened to hear about the passing of Mr cooney.

May he rest in peace and may God bless the cooney family. Thanks for bieng my friend john I will never forget that time in life.

Thank you Mr. Cooney for the countless, selfless hours of building and manicuring the best ice rink ever, year after year! My childhood has very fond memories of playing hockey with Mike and our friends. All Thanks to You. May your Soul rest happily in Heaven.

Mike,
My prayers are with you and your family.
I was lucky to know your Dad, and I thank our friendship for that.
