Barbara Frisbie Obituary

Barbara Shirley Romine Frisbie, 1918-2009, age 91, of La Grange and Downers Grove, died Thursday, June 4, 2009, at Fairview Baptist Home in Downers Grove, IL. She was born in Royal, Nebraska on May 3, 1918, the daughter of George E. Romine and Catherine Ickler. She was always proud of being a member of a "First Family of Virginia" through her father's family (Johnson). As a child she lived for a year in a sod house when they homesteaded in South Dakota. She was a graduate of University of Nebraska in 1942, with a BS in Home Economics. She married Lawrence I Frisbie on December 24, 1941 at which time he entered the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant and she joined him at the various army bases where he served in the western United States. She began her teaching career in Nebraska during the war and continued teaching later at Lyons Township High School. She also enjoyed sewing and taught and demonstrated sewing. She is survived by her two sons Lawrence Jr. (Ruth) and Bruce (Karen); one daughter Carol (Robert) Peters; seven grandchildren, Sean (Katie), Jason (Nicole), Larry, Kate (Kevin) Wickert, Laura, Cathy Peters and Casey Peters; and 3 great grand children, Shane and Riley Frisbie and Aiden Wickert. She enjoyed traveling with her husband when he retired. She spent many hours tending her flower garden, collecting coverlets and glass, traveling throughout the United States, fishing in Minnesota, watching the Chicago Bears, playing bridge, visiting with friends and enjoying time with her grandchildren. She was a member for many years and did volunteer work at LaGrange Highlands Community Church, was on the board of Colonial Coverlet Guild and served as President, was an active member of the Early American Glass Club, the Rose Club and the 20-30-40 Glass club. She made many presentations of coverlets and glass. A memorial service is scheduled on June 24 at 1:30 PM in the chapel at Fairview Baptist Home, 250 Village Drive, Downers Grove, IL. Memorials may be given to the Frisbie Family Memorial 4-H Scholarship Fund #00173, University of Nebraska Foundation, 1010 Lincoln Mall, Suite 300, Lincoln, NE 68508 or The National Museum of the American Coverlet, 322 S. Jullana St., Bedford, PA, 15522. The family requests no flowers.

The best grandma in the world anyone could ask for. You will be missed by many but we all understand that you couldn't live without grandpa.

I would like to send my deepest condolences to the family. I was very sad to hear the bad news. My family sends there condolences also. I just found out along with my sisters (Jill and Nicole) otherwise we would have been there to pay our respects. My heart goes out to all of you.
