Allen Beals Obituary

Allen Mason Beals Jr., 71, died July 9, 2014 after a quiet and courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Washington, DC on February 16, 1943 and spent his childhood in Annapolis, Maryland and summers on the family dairy farm in Pownal, Vermont.

After graduating from Annapolis High, he earned a Business Administration degree from Elon College, and a graduate degree from NC State University in Agricultural Economics. While teaching in the NCSU Agricultural Economics Department from 1966 until his retirement in 2001, he received numerous teaching awards and was designated a NCSU Distinguished Alumni Undergraduate Professor. Allen's gift was his ability to establish lasting relationships with his students not only while in college but after graduation, including children of former students. Allen's joy was his students who returned to family farms or worked in Ag. Business. His teaching legacy will always be his students and their accomplishments.

After retirement, Allen's hobby of woodworking turned into a business of making red cedar furniture including rockers, chairs, swings, picnic tables, and various custom pieces. Additionally, he loved cultivating a vegetable garden which he shared with family and friends. He truly treasured playing an active role in the life of his grandchildren.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Betsy J. Beals; son, Aric B. Beals and his wife, Jill D. Hall of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Andrew R. Beals and Sarah L. Beals; sisters, Bonnie B. Mastros and Jeanne L. Stewart both of Annapolis, MD; sister in law, Emily P. Lajoye of Clayton, NC; and aunt, Hazel Beals of Lake Bomoseen, VT.

He was preceded in death by his father, Allen M. Beals, Sr.; mother, Beulah M. Shafer; and brother, John Charles Lajoye.

A celebration of life service will be held at First United Methodist Church, 117 S. Academy Street, Cary, NC 27511 on Wednesday, July 16th at 3:00 PM where the family will receive friends immediately after the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to NC Ag Foundation, NC State Campus Box 7645, Raleigh, NC 27695-7654. Designate in memo of check Herman A. Sampson III and Allen M. Beals Jr. Endowment for Agricultural Business Management (ABM) Students in the Agricultural Institute. Make check payable to NC Ag Foundation.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Beals. He was a great teacher, mentor and most of all FRIEND to his students. I called him several times over the years, to touch base or ask him a question. He had a great philosophy on life, which will live long with his students.

To Allens Family
Allen was a great man, a wonderful gentleman with character and goodness in his heart. The world has been lucky to have such a quality individual. Although I have missed seeing him in years now, he has not been forgotten, nor will he be. Allen was always helpful with his knowledge in so many areas, always kind, always interesting but especially, always a friend. I enjoyed so much talking to him and helping him load his beautiful cedar furniture when he sometimes transferred some he hand made to so many others so they too could enjoy his work and passion. He is truly a man to be proud of, your family is so blessed to have had Allen in your family, and the world is blessed to have had him in our presents.

Betsy I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Allen Beals. He was a great mentor to me as I was studying at NCSU's Ag Institute in 1980 & 82. He encouraged me in many ways. He was a great man that will be greatly missed by many. One interesting thing about Mr. Beals he could talk with you just a few minutes and almost pinpoint where you were from in NC.

Dear Family,
We were so sorry to read of Allen's passing. My twin sister and I grew up in Annapolis and attended Annapolis High. Our fathers worked together at The Experiment Station. My father loved to go to Allen's wrestling matches and so did we. While working at ARE we came to realize what a great person he was -- always caring and sharing and telling us about his "Betsy" (the love of his life). He was a true friend and will be greatly missed. We pray that The Lord will give you strength and His peace which surpasses all understanding.

I am sorry to hear that Allen passed and my thoughts go out to his family.

Allen always had a smile, a wave, and a cheerful comment. I would see him outside woodworking as I reached my turn around point at the gate to Umstead State Park on my daily runs over the years.

My mother has two of his benches in her yard and likes to sit on them when the weather is nice.

We've enjoyed our get-togethers throughout the years so much; it was always special to be with y'all. Loved Allen's laugh, his voice, and the twinkle in his eyes! Admired his energy and talents. Betsy:
Words of adequate impact will not come to me now to fully express my sincere appreciation for Allen's friendship over these past 48 years. When asked to do a job, no matter how difficult or involved, he did it with a smile and was not happy until the job was don well and completed. No matter how you were feeling, a visit with Allen always left you feeling better. What a rare and wonderful talent. You and I face a time of adjustment ahead, but with our faith and our great friends, we'll make it! My thoughts and best wishes go out to you today during these sad and trying times.
Your Friend,

Betsy and Family,

Although I didn't know Allen until after he retired from NCSU, I found him to be as fine a person as one could meet. He was so kind to bring his summer garden produce to the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ARE) to share with those who did not have fresh vegetables. And, had it not been for Allen and a few others, we wouldn't have had such spectacular departmental picnics most every May or June.

Life is so fragile, and we don't realize just how fragile it is until times like this.

Please accept my deepest condolescences for your family. Allen will be greatly missed by so many people. May God bless you in dealing with the grief ahead and leave you with the many good memories of Allen.
