Alfred Balocca Obituary

Alfred E. Balocca, 89, passed into eternal life on January 6th. A devoted Catholic family man, he is survived by his wife, Lee, and children, Rick (Margie), Katie (Chuck), Larry (Mari), Bob, Jim (Patrice), Dan Balocca, Pat (Tom) McGonigle, and the late Bill Meier. Loving grandfather of Ryan (Alejandra), Patrick, Christopher, Allison, Sara, Charles, Louis, Erin, Maureen, Keith, and Kevin. Great grandfather of Joachin. Also, he is survived by his sister, Mary Lou O'Keefe. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marian Balocca. Alfred graduated from St. Ignatius High School and attended John Carroll University. He volunteered for the V12 Navy officer training program, completed midshipman's school at the University of Notre Dame, and attended radar school at both Harvard and M.I.T. Assigned to the aircraft carrier, U.S.S. San Jacinto, he was a radar officer and a crewmate of President George H.W. Bush. Participating in seven major operations, Alfred received seven Bronze stars for his service. Following WWII, he was employed by American Can Corporation Research and was instrumental in the development of numerous products and holds several patents. After thirty five years, he retired in 1982 and provided consulting services. Alfred was an active parishioner at Immaculate Conception Parish in Elmhurst as well as St. Michael's Church in Wheaton and was a Eucharistic minister. Visitation Ahlgrim Funeral Home, 567 S. Spring Rd., Elmhurst, IL from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday. Prayers Tuesday January 11 9:00 a.m. to Immaculate Conception Church, 134 W. Arthur, Elmhurst. Mass at 9:30 a.m. Interment St. Michael's Cemetery, Wheaton, IL. Memorial donations would be appreciated to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation or Immaculate Conception Church.
