A. Hallman Obituary

A. Howard Hallman 32 year Westchester resident. At 7:32 a.m. on Saturday, July 4, Howard Hallman's earthly life came to a grace-filled and peaceful Amen in his home in Westchester, IL. with his dear wife, Marlene, at his side. The 84 years that God gave him were rich in service and love. Howard Hallman was born October 3, 1924 in Presbyterian Hospital, Chicago, the oldest son of Dr. Alfred Herman and Erna Elizabeth (nee Hoth) Hallman. He was baptized Alfred Howard Hallmann on October 19, 1924 at Jehovah Lutheran Church, Chicago by Rev. Dr. Graebner. Sponsors were Margaret Hoth, Louis Keko and Rev. Arthur Hallmann. Howard was confirmed in the Christian faith on Palm Sunday, April 10, 1938 at Grace English Lutheran Church, Chicago. He graduated from Schubert grade school and Luther Institute high school. After a semester at Northwestern University, Howard was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Corp in April, 1943. He was trained as a weather observer and served 16 months in Italy with the 12th Weather Squadron attached to the 455th Bomb Group, the 27th Fighter Group and the 62nd Troop Carrier Group. After the war he returned home to finish his degree in physics at Northwestern University graduating in 1949. He was married to Marlene Ann Krueger on September 9, 1950 by Rev. Otto Geiseman at Grace Lutheran Church in River Forest with his brother Donald serving as best man. Howard worked at Ashland Oil & Chemical for a year before joining the Continental Can Company where he worked as a Research Scientist for 39 years, retiring in 1989. In his spare time he enjoyed working on electronics and took classes to learn how to repair T.V.s, radios and VCRs. He built his own test equipment and liked to spend time tinkering in his workshop where he could fix almost anything. Howard worked with the Cubs Scouts and Boy Scouts for over 10 years as a Pack Leader, Webelos Leader and on the Blackhawk Area Council. In retirement Howard enjoyed yearly vacations to Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri as well as several Caribbean cruises and visits to Hawaii and Sanibell Island, Florida. He also spent time building models of his favorite Ford and Duesenberg cars and attended many air shows. Some of his favorite gifts included flights in different types of aircraft including a WWII AT-6 Texan trainer and a Stearman biplane and a hot air balloon. Howard was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church in River Forest where he served as an usher for over 50 years. He started 2 years before he was a member and continued as Head Usher until his health no longer permitted him to serve. In later years he enjoyed helping with their newsletter, bulletin and meeting with the Cornerstone group. Howard's favorite music was by John Philip Sousa, especially The Stars and Stripes Forever, so it's fitting that he died on the 4th of July. Howard is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Marlene; children Cathy (Mickey) Kappel of Schaumburg , John (Sandra) Hallman of Rockford, Paul (Karleen) Hallman of Lakewood and James (Jennifer) Hallman of Naperville. Also survived by grandchildren Steven (Wendy) Kappel, Jason (Kristin) Hallman, Adam Hallman, Michelle Kappel, Briana Hallman, Brittany Hallman and Ryan Hallman and several nieces and nephews. Howard was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Donald and Richard. May the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ comfort all who loved Howard until we are together again at our glorious resurrection.Private funeral services followed by interment to beheld at Glen Oak Cemetery, Hillside. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, July 13 at 7:00pm at Grace Lutheran Church, 7300 Division St., River Forest, IL 60305.
