Francis League Obituary

Francis Douglas "Doug" League III, 54, died on January 22, 2026, after a prolonged illness.

Doug was born on November 28, 1971, in Cheverly, Maryland, to Francis D. League, Jr. and Patricia League (Gerald). He lived in Alexandria, Virginia, with his wife, Lisa (Wendel), and was a loving father to their children, Michael John (12) and Katherine Helen (10).

Doug was a devoted brother to his sister, Jessica (Watson), brother-in-law to Michael Watson, and uncle to Tyler and Andrew. He was also a caring son-in-law to John and Barbara Wendel, brother-in-law to David Wendel (Sunny), Krista Wendel, and Jenny Hans (Greg), and uncle to Charlie and Ava.

Doug earned a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from the University of Maryland, a Master of Science in Human-Centered Computing from the University of Maryland Baltimore County, and a certificate in Digital Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art.

Combining his love of math and science with his passion for art and design, Doug built a career in information technology and user experience design. He most recently served as a User Experience Design Lead at the Library of Congress, a role he greatly enjoyed.

Doug was an avid fan of UMD Terps football and basketball, the Washington Commanders, the Baltimore Orioles, and the Washington Capitals. He also loved playing pickleball, drawing, spending time at the beach, and traveling and exploring new places with his family. Doug was known for his quick wit, generous spirit, and easygoing nature, and brought laughter and kindness to those around him. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In addition to the family listed above, Doug is survived by many uncles, aunts, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, William and Helen Gerald and Francis and Dorothy League, and his uncle Kenneth Gerald.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Denton, MD, on February 10 at 11 a.m. His burial service and a Celebration of Life will be held in Alexandria, VA, at a later date.
