Kent Pegram, 64, passed away at his home on January 22, 2026. Born on June 25, 1961, he was the son of the late John “Smoky” Pegram and Phyllis Webb Pegram.
A lifelong resident of Bassett, Kent was a proud graduate of Virginia Tech and remained a loyal Hokie fan throughout his life. He was a dedicated professional, in recent years, employed with A & A Environmental.
Kent was a man of quiet strength and a gentle, humble spirit. He was defined by a laid-back style and an incredible willingness to jump in and help whenever someone was in need. His generosity and devotion to his family were exemplary, and he will be remembered by many for his kind smile.
An avid outdoorsman, Kent found peace and joy in nature. Whether he was paddling his kayak, sailing, hiking, or snow skiing, he embraced the beauty of the world around him. He cherished his time at the beach, enjoyed the challenge of a complex word puzzle, and was a regular at the NASCAR races in Martinsville with his friends. He was also a passionate reader and a lover of his many dogs over the years.
Kent is survived by his siblings: Jane P. Young (Mark), Tom Pegram (Rita), Harriet P. McGuire (Danny), and Robert Pegram. He also leaves behind his longtime special friend, Kookie Turner, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a wide circle of friends who will miss him dearly.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 20, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place at Mt. Hermon Church of the Brethren Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Kent’s honor to SPCA Martinsville 132 Joseph Martin Hwy, Martinsville, VA 24112, Greater Bassett Area Community, Inc. 178 Pinewood Lane, Bassett, VA 24055 or the charity of your choice.
Online condolences may be expressed at www.bassettfuneralservice.com. Bassett Funeral Service is honored to serve the Pegram family.

I could write a book on growing up with Kent. We lived within a mile from each other-he was like a brother. We did everything together! He and I played, spent the night with each other and fought like brothers over the silliest of things. He was a scholar and an amazing athlete with a great ear for listening. Kent was brilliant and very well read. My wife,Wendy adored him. His quick actions saved her from harms way twice. Our daughter,Emily was captivated by him at first sight. One time when he was visiting us she took him by the hand and led him around our property showing off her sand box, swing and vegetable garden. Kent said she’s a talker! He smiled, shook his head and let out that famous gruff laugh of his. Kent was imperfectly perfect full of dry humor and keen wit! A”wizard of sorts”if you will. Mike “you can do most anything with a pocketknife, hammer, vice grips and a ROLL OF DUCK TAPE!” We once took a 22 mile canoeing and camping excursion on the New River. We were sore from laughing so hard. We went sailing on his boat and floated the Smith River several times. We took in several concerts at The Harvester in recent years. Saw a few NASCAR races also. When I was bedridden in the hospital after high school for many weeks he’d visit with a Sports Illustrated magazine and words of encouragement. He was always checking on me with uplifting words when I went through cancer several years ago. I can go on and on! In a nutshell “LIFE BY THE DROP” by Stevie Ray Vaughan and “THE BOYS OF FALL” by Kenny Chesney-TAKE A LISTEN!! So long my true FREE SPIRIT friend-Mike Wen and Ems Arendall

Many memories of Kent @ JDB High. I remember he came to graduation in blue jeans, sneakers and no socks. By chance, I ran upon him at a job site in Roanoke several years ago. We had a great conversation about the old times. My condolences to his siblings.

Oh what a shock. Kent was a friend and a foe. Funny and likable. The highs school days were memorable. The short person playing football. The class of 79' will always remember you and the crazy things about you. Rest in peace Kent.

It has been many many years since Kent and I last crossed paths. My family had moved to Williamsburg, Va. The last timeI.saw him was probably in 6th grade, or perhaps a time I visited Bassett while in Junior High. He was a friend and classmate. My deepest condolences go out to the family.
