Herbert A. Becker, 83, of Albuquerque, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2026. Herb was a lover of life and loved by many. He was born in 1942 in North Dakota and raised on a cattle ranch. After being drafted into the Army and serving overseas, he left for college at UND and eventually to law school in Albuquerque where he met and married Martha "Vicky" Wellito in 1969.

Herb was a great and respected attorney. His career in Indian water rights took his family from coast to coast. He served for over 20 years in the United States Department of Justice: first as Assistant U.S. Attorney in New Mexico and later as Director of the Office of Tribal Justice in Washington, D.C. In his last years of practice, he represented the Jicarilla Apache Nation.

Throughout his life, Herb passionately followed sports, most of all his beloved Bums, the Dodgers. He bopped to jazz, enjoyed fine food and drink, wagered on cards, and loved to travel. He visited 6 continents and as far as one knows, every state in the union.

Herb excelled as a husband, father, grandfather, son, grandson, brother, cousin, nephew, uncle, in-law, mentor, and friend. He lives on in splendid memories.
