David Erwin Gibson IV

David Erwin Gibson IV ("Deg"), born on April 27, 1948 in Albuquerque, passed away peacefully in the early hours of March 11, 2026, in Albuquerque.

A 1966 graduate of the Albuquerque Academy, where he was known as Red for his hair, he played quarterback and served as senior class president. He obtained a BA in Business Administration from Colorado College and then worked for many years at Gibson Lumber Company, the family business in Albuquerque, where he rose to the position of vice-president. Upon leaving Gibson Lumber, he became a stockbroker at Quinn & Co.

He loved fly fishing, skiing, bird hunting, travel, literature, and a good joke, and excelled at all of them. He had a keen and curious mind, and was a lifelong student of world history and current affairs. A proud and lifelong New Mexican, he cared deeply about the special history of his home and family, and was a keeper of many stories about Albuquerque and those who went before. Growing up in the, then, very rural North Valley, and as the elder brother, he loved leading his siblings around the ditches and fields, "discovering" a lightning-hollowed cottonwood tree that became a favorite destination. In search for the "perfect" fishing hole on Cow Creek, near Pecos at our family cabin, he led us to a series of spectacular waterfalls that became one of our most beloved places.

Deg had a lifetime love and affection and respect for New Mexican cultures, red chile, and high school football. He was a beloved son, brother, uncle, and faithful friend, and we all cherished him.

He is survived by his sisters Brett Solon and Gretchen Shaffer (Dan), brothers Daniel Gibson (Kitty) and Matthew Gibson, and numerous nephews, nieces, and grandnephews and grandnieces. He was preceded in death by his father David E. Gibson III and Virginia Whipple.
