Stanley Smith Obituary

Stanley Stuart Smith
Born: April 25, 1927
Died: November 9, 2020
Mr. Stanley Stuart Smith, age 93, of Downers Grove passed away November 9, 2020, in Florida due to complications from the Covid Virus.
He was born April 25, 1927 in Chicago, the son of George and Emma Smith (Ostendorf).
Stanley was the loving husband to his wife of nearly 70 years, Loretta Smith (Mizener). They are survived by their three children; Karen (Ron) Groebli, Bradley (Mary) Smith, Kenneth (Kathryn) Smith, nine grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. He was their loving mentor until the day he passed. He will be truly missed.
After living a few years in Columbus, Ohio, his parents moved back to Berwyn, IL where he spent most of his young life along with his late brother Robert Smith and his sister Nancy Smith (Harazin). To escape the polio outbreak in the highly populated Chicago area in the 1940's, Stanley spent a year of his high school life living on his mother's family farm and attending school in the rural town of Okawville, IL. A memory he fondly treasured. Ultimately, he graduated in 1945 from Morton High School where he played soccer and made life, long friends. He married Loretta in 1951 shortly after joining the military where he spent the next 2 years stationed in Germany during the Korean War. Upon his return, Stanley and Loretta lived in Berwyn, where they had their first 2 children. In 1958, they built a home in Downers Grove, IL where they welcomed their third child and happily lived the rest of their lives.
After the war Stanley worked a few jobs before beginning a 25 year career with House of Vision as an Optician. This led to him continue in his field with a move to Medical Eye Associates in Waukegan, IL. He specialized and became the manager of the contact lens department. He retired at 85 years old.
Over the years Stanley enjoyed bowling, bridge and he was a dedicated Chicago sports fan. He loved to play golf with Loretta and their friends. It was always extra fun when he was able to go out with his sons and grandsons. He played on the Downers Grove Golf League until he was 92.
Stanley and Loretta went on many trips that lead them all across the United States and to places such as Hawaii, France and Spain. He loved making memories and taking pictures of all the places they went to together.
Stanley's greatest accomplishment was his family and the way he was always there to help with advice and support. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
A private burial will take place on July 17, 2021 at Clarendon Hills Cemetery followed by a celebration of life for friends and family members at the Elgin Country Club, 2575 Weld Rd. Elgin Illinois from 1–5pm. Appetizers and drinks will be served.
Donations in his honor can be made to the Wounded Warriors Project.
