Obituary for Doris “Penny” Hurlbert
Doris “Penny” Hurlbert, of Danville and formerly of North Troy, Vermont, passed away peacefully at home on January 6, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Penny was born on September 23, 1947, to Robert and Louise Wetherell. She dedicated more than 30 years of her life to nursing, working proudly in nursing homes where she formed lasting bonds with both residents and staff. She especially enjoyed returning to visit and see the nurses she had trained over the years.
Outside of her work, Penny lived a life full of curiosity, creativity, and adventure. She loved riding her Spyder, snowmobiling, and sneaking down back to the river to fish. As many knew, Penny had an unwavering passion for hunting four-leaf clovers—collecting what the family believes to be around 4,000 in a single summer.
She spent cherished time at horse pulls, which she fondly referred to as her second family. Penny also treasured her close friendship with Margo Hanson, sharing endless conversations and memorable adventures—often leading them to China Moon and Walmart.
A gifted local artist, Penny could spend hours gazing at a blank canvas until inspiration struck, transforming it into an incredible work of art. She took great pride in knowing that her paintings found homes across numerous states and countries.
Penny is survived by her children Renea, Scott, and Mike with his wife Melissa; her ten grandchildren Candace, Tim, Chris, Jesse, Angel, Samantha, Kaleb, Skye, Michaela, and Levi; and her eleven great-grandchildren Hayley, Cameron, Benjamin, Devin, Allison, Gavin, Zoe, Colton, Sofia, Laine, and Waylon. She also leaves behind her sisters Bunny Bickford and husband Bruce, and June Griswald and husband Gary, as well as her special sister-in-law Theresa Wetherell.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband Jerry; her parents; and her brothers Ralph “Bo” Allard and Malcolm “Dovey” Wetherell, the latter also being her lifelong best friend.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Home Health & Hospice—especially Nurse Jen—as well as Katie Burnell at the Danville Health Center and Sabrina, all of whom helped make it possible for Penny to be cared for at home.
Per Penny’s request there will be no services. A celebration of life will be planned for early summer.
On-line condolences are welcome at curtis-britch.com. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Curtis-Britch & Bouffard Funeral Home, & Cremation Service, locally family owned and operated.
