A celebration of life service for Deacon Maxwell "Sonny" Corbett who passed on January 25, 2026, will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at New Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 3201 E. Lake Avenue, Tampa, Florida, with Rev. Dr. Kendrix J. Gardener, Officiating. Interment will follow in Pinehill Cemetery, Bealsville, Florida. There will be a viewing on Friday, January 30, 2026, from 3:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home, 3000 N. 29th Street, Tampa, Florida.
Maxwell "Sonny" Corbett was born on November 30, 1938, in Valdosta, Georgia to the late Lorenzo Corbett and Johnnie Mae (Smith) Corbett. He moved to Orlando, Florida in the summer of 1975 where he met and later married Sarah (Scipio) Corbett. He and his family later moved to Tampa, Florida where he started to subcontract fence installations for Central Florida Fence Company. When he became unable to do fence installations, he went back to his career of driving "Big Rigs." His last successful career was in his lawn care business, where he had over 160 clients (his family found out later, lol). God blessed him in all his work, in whatever his hand touched in 1981.
"Bro" became a member of New Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. He was obedient to the Lord's call and was ordained as Deacon Maxwell Corbett and served NFMBC for thirty plus years.
He was devoted to God, family and his church. Deacon Corbett walked closely with the Lord throughout his life until the very end. He was a member of several Gospel Groups-Trumpets of Joy, The Traveling Stars and The Gospel Legends. Besides loving to sing he also loved fishing, eating and being surrounded by his family. You could always count on him for a good "dad joke" and wholesome laugh.
To cherish memories of him, Maxwell Corbett is survived by his devoted wife, Sarah L. Corbett; daughters, Chiquita Burgman, Mary Jenkins, Vera Reaves (Jarrett) and Amy Corbett; son, Johnny Mitchell (Carole), Lorenzo Mitchell (Sherri) and Melvin Williams; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchilden, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
