Ada Gurkin Obituary
Ada Jean Gurkin, age 97, a resident of Pinetown died Thursday January 22, 2026, at Ridgewood Manor.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday January 28, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Shiloh Original Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Bobby Owens officiating. Burial will follow in the Gurkin Family Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
Ada was born on November 12, 1928, in Beaufort County to the late William John Gurkin and Dicey Alice Woolard Gurkin. She was a 1947 graduate of Bath High School. Ada worked in farming and as clerk at Pinks Grocery in Pinetown. She loved sewing, gardening, and cooking desserts. Ada was a cheerful and happy person and just enjoyed life. She was a member of Shiloh OFWB Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and in the choir. She was preceded in death by her angel and caregiver Sandra Boyd.
Survivors include her nephew, Jack Gurkin (Brenda) of Pinetown, great nephews, Russell Johnson of Virginia, Scott Gurkin of Garner and William Michael Gurkin.

Ada Jean has been missed in the Pinetown community for a while. She with her sisters, Alice and Livie (Olivia) farmed the family farm. She helped raise her niece, Jeanette (my aunt). She dearly loved Jeanette's two sons, Jeff and Russell Johnson. Always willing to help in any way, she helped me with my mama after she had a stroke. Ada was a familiar figure in Pinetown walking to the post office and visiting many people along the way. My mama was one of those people and she always enjoyed those visits. Sadly, Ada is the last one of her closely knit family. No doubt she is helping someone somewhere because that was just her nature.
