Julius William Thompson, Jr., a resident of Glen Ellyn and Wheaton for 48 years, passed away on May 24, 2014.
Bill was the beloved husband of Martha Thompson (nee Sharples) for 51 years; loving father of Juli Beth (Nicholas) Hinds; dear grandfather of Charlotte M. Hoover and Eleanor K.S. Hoover; brother of Bonni J. (Byrl J.) Engel; and many nieces and nephews.
Bill was a proud graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he participated in Navy ROTC before serving on active duty in Japan and Korea as a Lieutenant.
In addition to his work as a life insurance broker, Bill was a Shriner and served on the boards of Hospice of DuPage, the Glen Ellyn Children's Chorus; the Wheaton College Artist Series; and Outreach Community Ministries, receiving the H.C. Crittenden Meritorious Service Award in 2009. He also served as Deacon and an Elder at the First Presbyterian Church in River Forest and in Glen Ellyn. He was an accomplished jazz drummer and percussionist who loved music, travel, reading, art, and Chicago sports.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 7, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 550 N. Main St, Glen Ellyn.
In lieu of flowers, donations are gratefully requested to the Missions program at First Presbyterian Church of Glen Ellyn, Outreach Community Center in Carol Stream, or the Birch Creek Music Performance Center in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin.
