Ruth Carlson Flegel Obituary
Ruth Carlson Flegel

Ruth Carlson Flegel, age 97, passed away on July 29, 2017. A life-long resident of Illinois, she lived 69 years in Downers Grove.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter J. Flegel; and sons, James C. Flegel and Walter J. Flegel, Jr.

She is survived by her loving children, Ruth (Lawrence) Kane, Richard (Sherry) Flegel and Lynn (Jake) Gedvilas; cherished grandmother of Rick Flegel, Jr., Jason (Jennifer) Flegel, Kelly (Amy) Salach, Mark Salach, Leigh (Tommy) Detmer, Todd (Tara) Gedvilas, Brett Gedvilas; and great-grandchildren, Ally, Lucas and Yvonne; dear sister of Adeline Resh and Charles Carlson.

Staying up through the entire Cubs game to see them win the World Series was a highlight for her. Sporting activities were important to her; in the past skiing and ice skating and later in life bowling, dancing and especially swimming at Maple Hill Pool. She and her husband were Charter Members of the pool, organizing members to purchase the pool from a developer decades ago and she swan there through 2016.

Besides being a practical joker, her sense of humor was well known. She volunteered in many activities such as Girl Scouts, teacher aide and worked at both Puffer and Belle Aire schools.

Ruth and Wally taught their children to love nature, to be careful, thoughtful and protective of the environment and the animals that live there. It is in that vein that if you wish to make a donation in Ruth's memory that you might consider making a contribution to The Sierra Club, the Environmental Defense Fund, the Natural Resources Defense Council or any environmental group of your choice. Another charity dear to her heart is Good Shepherd Manor in Momence, Illinois.

The family would like to thank Sunrise Assisted Living 3rd floor staff and Harbor Light Hospice staff for their care and compassion.

Ruth will be laid to rest next to her husband and sons on Wednesday, August 2nd, 10:30AM at Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery, 17W201 Roosevelt Rd., Oakbrook Terrace, IL.
