Died: September 11, 2017
Marian Elizabeth Carey (nee Steninger) passed away gently with her sons by her side, on Monday, Sept. 11, 2017, in Madison, Wis. She was 96 years old, born in Lincoln, Ill., on December 3rd, 1920, to Georgia and Raymond B. Steninger.
Marian initially received a business school education, and used that skill during World War II when she served in the WAVES, the women's branch of the Navy, as a Yeoman First Class, stationed at Naval Headquarters in Washington, D.C. After the war she entered the University of Iowa and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Speech Therapy in 1952.
At the University of Iowa she met accounting student Henry G. "Hank" Carey, and they married in 1950 while still in school. Marian and Hank lived for many years in the Chicago area, until 2013 when they relocated from Downers Grove to Madison, Wis. They were by each other's side until Hank passed away March 27, 2014.
Marian lived her life after school and marriage as a homemaker for her husband and sons. She gave her sons an excellent example of a thoughtful, ethical, well read, and educated woman. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, and of P.E.O. International, a women's education philanthropy. She also served for many years as a sponsor through Al-Anon.
Marian is survived by her sons, Jim Carey and his children, Sara and Dana, Paul Carey and Sherri Lasko and their son, Aidan, and Paul's children, Briana, Aliya, Shannon, John Carey and his wife, Merriann, and their children, Helen and Mason; and her husband, Hank's son, Hank, Jr., and his wife Shirley.
There will be a private memorial Oct. 21, 2017.
