Marceil Joan Pleis (nee Hjortland), age 83, of Marco Island, FL, passed away on May 1, 2017, after a brief illness.

Marceil was born on July 24, 1933, in Kalamazoo, MI.

Marceil is preceded in death by her parents, (Martin and Cecilia Hjortland); sisters, (Sondra Hjortland and Bonnie Uyttebroeck), her husband (Raymond "Skip" Pleis); her ex-husband, (Alexander Naidenovich); and beloved friend, Bertha "Bertie" Jane Thorsen.

Marceil is survived by her brothers, Donald (Sandy) Hjortland of Marco Island, Fl, and Long Lake, IL, and Martin Jon (Cindy) Hjortland of Bellevue, FL; and sister, Kristi (Michael) Bertolette of Ft Collins, CO. Marceil is also survived by her three children, William (Kellye) Naidenovich of Omaha, NE, Marta (Phil) Cullen of Downers Grove, IL, David Naidenovich of Marco Island, FL; her eight grand children, include Alexandra Naidenovich of Flagstaff, AZ, Audrey (Robert) Murphy of Omaha, NE, Olivia O'Hara of Omaha, NE, Will (Klaudia) Cullen of Downers Grove, IL, Alex Cullen of Chicago, IL, Krista Cullen of Chicago, IL, Michael (Christina) Naidenovich of Glendale Heights, IL, Christopher Naidenovich of Sandy Springs, GA; and her four great grand children, Jackson "Jax" Cullen, Olivier Naidenovich and Jack and Sam Murphy.

Marceil was an avid reader, expert cross-word puzzle player, passionate Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune watcher, and life-long educator having received multiple post-graduate degrees from Elmhurst College (IL) and teaching in the Elmhurst, IL, public school system and Lincoln Elementary School. She was also a life-long Lutheran and attended Church services on a regular basis. Marceil was a unique and challenging character who possessed a strong competitive spirit, an adventurous lifestyle, and inquisitive intellect through-out most of her life.

And in typical Marceil fashion, she has chosen not to have a funeral or memorial service, and instead wishes her ashes to be spread by her family in a private ceremony.
