Died: May 16, 2016; in Barrington, IL
Janet "Jan" Lynn Smith, 65, of Elmhurst, Illinois, passed away on May 16, 2016, at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, with her family at her bedside. Jan fought hard to recover from several critical health issues that occurred suddenly in early February 2016, including open heart surgery and multiple strokes that resulted from a severe blood infection.
Jan was born in Elmhurst, IL on February 2, 1951, to Walter and Leona Loek. She is survived by her siblings, Allan, Linda (Richard), Lee Anne and Wayne (Amy). She attended Immanuel Lutheran School, York High School and received her degree as a Registered Nurse from Copley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1972. Jan worked the majority of her career as an OB Nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove and for the last several years specialized as a lactation consultant, which was her passion and purpose.
Jan is survived by her husband of 43 years, Harvey Smith; and their five children, Jenna (Jason) Little, Ryan (Lori), Kaitlin, Zachary (Lauren), and Kyle; her five grandchildren, Jack, Nina, and Leona (Ryan and Lori); Julian (Zachary and Lauren), and James (Jenna and Jason). More than anything Jan cherished her time with her grandchildren. She was a loving wife and mother, who had a creative spirit, a talent for singing and gardening, and an unforgettable sense of humor. She will be dearly missed.
A memorial service to celebrate Jan's life with her family will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elmhurst on June 4, 2016. Visitation will be from 10AM to 12PM, with the memorial beginning at 12PM and reception immediately following in the Parish Hall of the church.
Memorial donations may be given to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Good Samaritan Hospital, 3815 Highland Ave. Downers Grove, IL 60515.
