More than 500 people have been killed when a major earthquake struck on the Iran-Iraq border, according to the Washington Post.

The state-run Islamic Republic News Agency said 407 people were killed and 6,700 injured, mainly in Iran’s western provinces, after a 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck the Iraqi side of the border.

Officials in Iran updated the death toll to be over 500.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the majority of casualties occurred in the Kermanshah province in western Iran.

The quake contaminated drinking water supplies and knocked out electricity, phone and gas services across a wide area of Kermanshah, most of which is rural.
