Lewis Skeels Obituary

Lewis Lonn Skeels

Born: May 5, 1947

Died: July 6, 2017

Lewis Lonn Skeels, age 70, passed peacefully in Chicago on Thursday, July 6th 2017.

Lewis was born on May 5th 1947 to Lewis Skeels and Rose (Rotramel) Skeels and raised in Champaign, Illinois. Lewis left central Illinois to serve in the US Army during the Vietnam War. After returning, he moved to Chicago and began a 30 year career at the Chicago Board of Trade trading soybeans and politely elbowing his fellow traders, a job he treasured. Lewis was an attentive and loving father to four daughters Alena, Rachel, Katherine (Gacek) and Emily. He was a long and active member of the Presbyterian Church of Western Springs and LaGrange Country Club. Lewis valued strong relationships and was a source of love and support for his family, church family and numerous friends. His affection was returned in kind, especially during the last year as he battled pancreatic cancer. Before recent complications, Lewis described the last year as the best year of his life.

He is survived by his four daughters; son-in-laws, Cameron Troxel and Lucas Gacek; brother, Larry (and wife Cyndy); sisters, Carol, Dawn (and husband, Ali Nazemi) and Nita.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 9th 2017 at 2:00 pm at Presbyterian Church of Western Springs, 5250 Wolf Rd., Western Springs. The family will greet friends at the church after the ceremony.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made in Lewis's name to the Presbyterian Church of Western Springs or the Rolfe Pancreatic Cancer Foundation.

I never had the benefit of meeting Lewis, but I know his oldest daughter. Judging from what I know of her and what I have read in this memorial, I can tell he was someone special. I look forward to learning more about him in the future as I know his memory will help guide the lives of those he's left behind.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Lewis. I knew him for many years at CBOT and he was well liked and well respected by his peers. The floor may not last forever but his memory will!

l've seen Lew around town over the years. He was always so kind and would always ask about my children for whom his daughters babysat. But he would always get a twinkle in his eye when he talked about his daughters. His pride in his daughters was ever-present and profound. I'm so sorry for your loss and wish you comfort in this time.

Lewie was such a special person to our family. Standing shoulder to shoulder with my dad for 30 years and they still respected and loved each other very much . That says something. I have so many memories of Lewie and my dad being there for each other and for each other's families. Truly a special bond and special person. My mom also adored Lewie. I find some comfort that she's waiting for him. I am so so sorry for your loss, he will truly be missed. ~ Maggie Riazzi (Kampton)
