Anderson, Joanell V. - Burr Ridge  
Joanell V. Anderson Joanell V. Anderson, passed away on June 18, 2015, in Burr Ridge, Illinois. She was the daughter of James Edward Wise and Dorothy Campbell Wise and grew up in Chicago, IL. God blessed her with a beautiful voice and by the time she was in her late teens she was singing professionally, ultimately rising to the level of the featured vocalist on a popular national radio show and a contract with 20th Century Fox Movie Studios in Hollywood. After a short time there, she gave up her singing career to return to the Chicago area to marry John "Jack" Mangan Jr., a general contractor, who predeceased her in 1979. Together they had four children, John ( Kathy), Jim ( Mara ), and Jerry who survive her. Her daughter, Jamie Mangan King ( Geary ), passed away in January of 2015. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren. She spent most of her life in the Hinsdale, IL area where she not only raised her family, but was a successful business woman as well, opening and operating a woman's designer clothing salon for many years. Some years after Jack passed in 1979, she met and married Harry Anderson, an accomplished architect. Harry predeceased her in 2004. A private funeral service was held on June 30, 2015, followed by private interment at Bronswood Cemetery in Oak Brook, IL.

Devoted grandfather of Kevin, Megan and Katelyn Bartelt, Alisa and Lauren Penkala, Caden and Allison Overstreet. Dear brother of Joseph (Gail) Bartelt and John (Sharon) Bartelt. Fond brother-in-law of Thomas and Sandi Plechaty. Uncle of 5 nieces and 1 nephew. Bates, Martin - chicago  
Martin D. Bates Born: Sept. 23, 1911; in Quincy, MI Died: June 28, 2015; in Lisle, IL Martin D. Bates, age 103, passed away at Westbury Care Center, Brookdale of Lisle, on Sunday, June 28, 2015. A former resident of Glen Ellyn for 47 years, he had lived independently at Brookdale Lisle (formerly, The Devonshire) since 1999. Martin was born on September 23, 1911, at his maternal grandparents' farm home near Quincy, Michigan. After graduating from Quincy High School, he attended Michigan State College (now, University) in East Lansing, Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and completed the Army ROTC program to become a commissioned officer (2nd Lieutenant) in the Army Reserve. After graduation in 1936, he began his occupational career and married Barbara R. Hutchison, whom he had met while attending MSC; she was from Grand Rapids, Michigan. He had to put his civilian career on hold when he was called to Active Duty in the Spring of 1941. During World War II, he served as an antiaircraft artillery officer and participated in the Normandy invasion, landing at Omaha Beach on D-Day. At the end of the war, he stayed in the Army Reserve and retired at the rank of Colonel in 1971. Martin had a successful civilian career as a sales engineer of industrial rubber products. During his career, he worked for several companies; most notably, Thermoid Rubber Products Company and Sparks Belting Company. He retired as a sales representative from Sparks at the age of 75. Martin was an active member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Glen Ellyn, for over 50 years; an active member of the Glen Ellyn Kiwanis Club for more than 40 years; and a life member of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) for more than 20 years. He enjoyed playing cards (especially bridge) and bingo, working crossword puzzles and dancing. Martin is the last of his generation of the Bates family. He was preceded in death by his parents, James E. and Enid Bates; brother, Vilas Bates; sisters, Sylvia Hunter and Letha Smith; and wife, Barbara R. Bates. He is survived by his sons, Dwight W. (and wife Pauline) Bates of Maysville, KY, and Dale I. (and wife Julie) Bates of Kansas City, MO; grandchildren, Markus Bates, Nicole DeMuth, Matthew Bates and Justin Bates; 5 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A family memorial service will be held at Fort Sheridan Post Cemetery at a later date at which time interment with his wife will take place. Arrangements were made by the Leonard Memorial Home, Ltd., Glen Ellyn, 630-469-0032.

Eckhardt, Thomas A. - Naperville  
Thomas A. Eckhardt Born: June 12, 1944 Died: June 20, 2015 Thomas Allen Eckhardt, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2015, at Edward Hospital in Naperville, Illinois. He was born June 12, 1944, to the late Frederick and Doris Eckhardt of Wheaton, Illinois. Tom was the beloved husband of Sandy (Coats) Eckhardt whom he married March 25, 1972. He is also survived by his only brother, Fritz Eckhardt and his wife, Helen of Little River, South Carolina; his nephew, Christopher and his wife, Andrea of Wake Forest, North Carolina; and his niece, Melissa Eckhardt Murphy and her husband, Tom of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. Tom attended Wheaton schools, and was a graduate of the University of Wyoming where he earned the Juris Doctor degree. He was self-employed while practicing law in Glen Ellyn for over forty years. Tom was active in the Naperville Heritage Society serving as its vice president and chairman of the Heritage Antiques Show. Among Tom's interests were fishing, photography, and showing/breeding his Scottish Terriers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Scottish Terrier Club of America Health Fund (Ms. Lisa Kinchloe, STCA-HTF, 19250 Reavis Way, Prunedale, CA 03907). A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Violet B. Huling Born: July 8, 1921 Died: Sept. 10, 2014 Violet B. Huling, nee Becker, age 93, formerly of Countryside, IL, died Sept. 10, 2014. Violet was born July 8, 1921, to the late Max and Stella Becker. She was preceded in death by her brother, Carl M. Becker. She was the beloved wife of the late Donald B. Huling; and loving mother of Keith (Julie), Jill (Stephen) Davis, and April Waters; grandmother to 7, Jeffrey, Daniel, Michael (Cole), Lisbeth (Brennan) Downes, Christopher Davis, Chanelle Davis, Amber (Max Crowe) Waters; and great-grandmother to Finnian Downes. Violet was a volunteer at Adventist LaGrange Memorial Hospital for 32 years and was a retiree from Electro-Motive Division of General Motors. She was a long time member of Highlands Presbyterian Church, and was active in many local organizations: Golden GMs, LaGrange Highlands Women's Club, Countryside Seniors, Senior Friends, Highlands Presbyterian Church Women's Assoc., Robert Coulter Post American Legion Auxiliary 1941, Seniors Club of Western Springs and Newcomers Alumni Club. Memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 8, 2015, at 11:30 a.m. at Highland's Presbyterian Church, 1902 W. 59th St., LaGrange, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
