Henry G. Carey Born: July 8, 1923; In Dunblane, Saskatchewan, Canada Died: March 27, 2014; In Middleton, WI Henry G. "Hank" Carey, age 90, formerly of Downers Grove, Ill., died on Thursday, March 27, 2014. He was born on July 8, 1923, in Dunblane, Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of George P. and Clara (Amrud) Carey. Hank grew up in Sioux City, Iowa, where he graduated high school. He proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II as a radio instructor at Scott Field, Ill., and a radio operator in the China Burma Theater. After the war, in the summer of 1950, he went on to further his education at the University of Iowa in Iowa City where he majored in Accounting. There he met Marian Steninger, also a student at the university. They were married in time to get student housing for the fall. Both graduated in 1952. Hank was recruited by Arthur Andersen Public Accountants in Chicago. For the next four years, he worked there as an auditor and systems designer. Later, he was the Systems Director for the New Haven Railroad in Connecticut. He then worked for Illinois Blue Cross/Blue Shield for 18 years as Vice President-Controller and Assistant Treasurer. He retired in 1981. Hank moved to Downers Grove in 1960, where along with his sons, was active in Scouting. He was Cubmaster of Cub Scout Pack 99 and Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 85. Hank was awarded the Order of the Arrow. In 1973, Hank bought the wooded area of a dairy farm in Richland County, Wisconsin. There the whole family pitched in to help plant trees and improve the land. In retirement, Hank kept busy working part time at Kin-Ko Ace Hardware, researching his Norwegian ancestors, building furniture and canoeing with his son John. He also volunteered as a tax preparer for AARP and became a beekeeper. He sold his honey at the farmers markets in Downers Grove and Hinsdale. Hank is survived by his wife, Marian; his sons, Henry, Jr., James A., Paul R., and John R. Carey. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, George and Gene Carey; and a sister, Frances Hoffman. Private Memorial services will be held.
