Kenneth Berton Evans
Born: June 27, 1944
Died: July 27, 2017
Kenneth Berton Evans, known to family and friends as "Bert," passed away at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove after a brief illness on July 27, 2017, at the age of 73.
Bert was the beloved husband for 42 years of Janet Evans; loving father of Kent (Lauren) Evans; cherished grandfather of Kenny and Ethan Evans; second dad (D2) of Laurie Denning and Jim Denning; second grandpa to Zachary and Danielle Denning; brother-in-law to Ron (Lou) Jestice and Karen (Tom) Hetznecker; nephew to Don (Marianne) Johnson-Knecht; and fond uncle of several nieces and nephews. Bert was also a loving father to his family dog, Molly, and to Toto and Allie who predeceased him.
Born in Pueblo, Colorado, on June 27, 1944, Bert had a lifetime love for Colorado. Bert led a well-rounded life beginning with several years as a child living in post war Germany with his parents who predeceased him, Colonel Kenneth Berton Evans Sr. and Beatrice Johnson Evans. Very interested in scouting, Bert attained Eagle Scout at an early age, an honor he had in common with his brother-in-law, Vincent (Linda) Jestice, who also predeceased him.
After attending Mc Kendree College and Southern Illinois University, Bert graduated with a B.S. in Economics and Business. Soon after, Bert moved from his parent's home in the St. Louis area to the Chicago land area for employment. The highlight of his business career was the 23 years he spent with Xerox where his roles included Controller and Quality/Business Process Manager.
After retiring in 1996, Bert enjoyed most time spent with his family. He was an active supporter of his son's hockey pastime and he thoroughly enjoyed lots of travel; golfing; photography; gardening while enjoying his bird and squirrel friends. Bert also enjoyed home improvement projects and was a serious student of history, especially the Civil War. Bert was a visionary and a tremendous source of knowledge, having overcome and managed his dyslexia with a very detailed photographic memory. Bert lived his own life devoted to supporting Janet and Kent in all of their life endeavors. Bert, you are our hero!
Having lived in the Orchard Brook community in Downers Grove for 33 years, he treasured dearly all his friendships there as well as his dear friends from Xerox, hockey, golfing, and his dear extended family friendships developed through his son's friends over the years and his son's extended family through marriage who openly received Bert as a member.
In keeping with Bert's wishes, there will be a Celebration of Life service held at a later date.
