James Michael Holec, Sr. Born: Sept. 14, 1923; Oak Park Died: Dec. 10, 2013 James Michael Holec, Sr. passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2013, after a battle with the blood disease myelodysplastic syndrome. James was born on September 14, 1923, in Oak Park, IL. He grew up in Berwyn, IL. He excelled in baseball at Morton High School and was offered a professional contract with the Chicago White Sox minor league organization. His American Legion team took second place in the State tournament losing to the East St. Louis team which included Yogi Berra. He was an avid fan of the Chicago White Sox. He was a World War II veteran serving in the United States Army Air Forces from 1943 to 1946 as a meteorologist stationed at Guadalcanal where he reached the rank of Buck Sergeant. He attended the University of Illinois School of Business with a concentration in accounting and then, after his military service, graduated with an accounting degree from Rutgers University. He was employed with Standard Oil Company of California (now Chevron Corporation) from 1949 to 1975, retiring as a District Sales Representative. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling, golfing, gardening, card playing including bridge, and visiting with his family. His travels included many cruises including an Alaskan cruise with his whole family to celebrate his 55 th wedding anniversary with Marion. He was a resident of Downers Grove for over 50 years and a long time parishioner of Saint Joseph Church including being a member of the Resurrection Choir. He was a devoted husband to his wife and a devoted father to his sons. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Holec and Mary Valis Holec and his brothers and sisters Edward, Marie, Frank, Jr., Helen, Richard, and Al. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marion Rovtar Holec; sons James M. (Patricia Muldowney) Holec, Jr. of New Canaan, CT, Donald R. (Susan) Holec of Madison, WI, David A. (Ann) Holec of Greenville, NC, and Andrew K. (Dani) Holec of Peotone, IL; grandchildren: Kathleen Holec, Melanie Holec, Lauren Holec, Kelsey Hand, Ben Holec, Luke Holec, Conor Holec, Kiley Holec, Quinn Holec, Brittney Anderson, Brian Anderson, and Kevin Anderson; and great grandchildren: Ada Hand, Izabella Chadraba, Henry Chadraba, and Lillian Nance. Memorial Visitation Saturday, December 28th, Family and Friends will meet at 10:00 a.m. until time of Memorial Mass 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 4801 Main St., Downers Grove. A private family interment will be held at S.S. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Naperville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Joseph Church, 4801 Main Street, Downers Grove, IL 60516.
